Tahuantinsuyo Weaving Workshop- Backstrap weaving a dying art and tradition

It’s a rare occasion when you are privileged enough to encounter the master of a dying tradition and art. A visit to the Andean highlands brought us to the Agato village, one of many villages surrounding the famous Otavalo town. We rolled up to a nondescript concrete home with a small sign indicating our arrival to the Tahuantinsuyo Weaving Workshop. We we’re welcomed by a friendly Kichwe woman who escorted us to the backstrap weaving workshop we were able to meet Miguel Andrango. Plaza de Ponchos

Every Saturday morning droves of tourist buses come in with foreigners from around the globe to Plaza de Ponchos in the center of Otavalo. This is one of Ecuador’s largest markets filled with Kichwa people full of alpaca and wool goods, ponchos being the most famous of buys. The region is known for it’s textiles and has been successful both locally and internationally. Aside from the textiles are jewelry, wooden carvings, paintings of the region, and other crafts. Compared to other Latin American markets vendors the Otavaleños are quite friendly, photogenic, and not aggressive. We would hang around one vendor…

Guinea Pig Crater Lake, Ecuador

Guinea Pig Lake- Lake Cuicocho, Ecuador – Date 364/365 We’ve been to numerous lakes, mountains and volcanoes throughout Central America so when we arrived in Otavalo and were told there were several lakes near by and countless mountains so we weren’t sure which one to choose given our limited weekend stay. Through some research and some recommendations we ended up choosing to go to Lake Cuicocho, Ecuador (Kichwa/Quichua for lake guinea pig). On our way from Central America we knew we’d see a huge guinea pig influence in Peru but didn’t expect to see that same influence in Ecuador. These little guys…
